The Veterans Bridge opened for traffic in 1986. It crosses the Allegheny River 1.1 miles upstream from the point. The bridge carries Interstate 579, three southbound lanes and three north bound lanes, with three two reversible lanes in the center for high occupancy vehicles. The bridge utilizes a welded steel girder design. The main span stretches 410 feet and the bridge’s total length is 1,050 feet. The deck is 51 feet above the river at normal water levels.
Fun fact: A portion of the roof of a former Pennsylvania Railroad freight building on Liberty Ave had to be removed to complete construction of this bridge.
